Trip to the ER

Oh boy…we had a bit of a scare earlier this evening (or I should say yesterday evening). Hubby and I were watching a movie (The Hills Have Eyes…a rather gross movie, by the way) and the boys were playing out in the back yard. They came in with the younger crying and our older son said a branch fell out of a tree and it hit him (the younger one) on the back of the head. (Since that freak snowstorm in late May, we’ve had small branches falling constantly…but none were ever big enough to cause damage.) Hubby and I jumped up real fast to look at him. He was bleeding quite a bit, so we jumped in the car (without shoes) and drove a few blocks to the firestation…since we weren’t sure if the nearest hospital was near here or Susanville (found out there is one near here…like I had thought). Meanwhile I was applying slight pressure to his head with some paper towels. That’s pretty much when I lost it and started crying…and when he stopped crying…lol.

Anyway, the firemen helped us and they called the EMT station (of which we do have here in town…good to know) and they checked our younger son out. They told us he was responding well and that it (the head wound) didn’t look that bad….and I felt like weights had lifted off my chest and out of the pit of my stomach, as they sounded very reassuring. They told us either they can transport him to the hospital to be checked out (to see if he needed stitches)…or we could. Since it wasn’t life-threatening we decided to drive there. First we stopped off at home to grab shoes and tie up the dogs, then we headed to the hospital. All the while trying to keep him awake…since he kept starting to fall asleep in the car. (Apparently the adrenaline rush had left him and he was basically crashing…so the doctor told us.)

After the nurse had cleaned his head up with peroxide, the wound didn’t look so bad…pretty much a goose-egg lump with a small gash in the center…not even bad enough to need stitches…yay! And the doctor said he most likely didn’t have a concussion, either, as he wasn’t showing any signs of one (pretty much alert, no vomiting, walking fine). They gave him some Motrin for the swelling and told us to apply Neosporin to the wound twice a day.

Once we got home he was acting like his normal self…wanting to eat and play. I have to watch him tonight and wake him up every 4 hours just to make sure there’s no concussion. Otherwise, he’s fine. Boy, talk about scary, though…when I saw that much blood on the back of his head…ugh, what a horrible feeling. Though now I’ve been told by everyone that head woulds bleed a lot, even when they aren’t that bad…so I’ve come to find out…the hard way. 8O

Girl’s Night Out

I’ve been away from home (and my computer) for the past few days, so I haven’t had the chance to blog about my fun time Thursday and Friday. So, here goes!

Both my sis-in-law and I needed a break from the boys…they were driving us nuts! So we got our hubbies to watch them and we took a trip to Reno for a night!

We left Thursday afternoon, stopping in town to pick up some new shoes. Then it was an hour and a half of driving to Reno. We had no reservation (as we had made one for Friday night, but cancelled it and were waiting for the hold to be released off our funds), but being a Thursday, we figured we’d be able to find a room. After finding out the rates at Eldorado (while trying to get show tickets with the room…but they weren’t offering that deal), we went over to Silver Legacy…and decided to stay there since they were much cheaper!

While walking back through the casino to get our bag from the car, we saw the tail end of a fight going down in the Silver Legacy buffet. What looked like a 40-something guy either hit or shoved a much older man (he looked like he was in his 70’s or so). Only there for 20 minutes and we’re already seeing some action! 8O

Anyway…we get the bag, get to our room…and decide it’s dinner time…being that’s it’s about 7ish now. So we go to the Eldorado buffet…and basically stuff ourselves…lol. The food there is great!

After dinner, we went window shopping. We looked in all the little shops throughout the casino. And we got tattoos! Ok, so they weren’t real…they were airbrushed on. I got a triquetra on the back of my neck, while my sis-in-law got a little turtle on her side. But now we’re both debating on getting the real thing…cuz those fake ones looked pretty neat! 8)

All the shops close about 9, so we headed back up to the room, trying to think of what else we could do. Yes, I know we were in a casino…but neither one of us really like to gamble, nor do we just have money to blow on machines that give you nothing back 3/4 of the time. So we went back to the room and looked through the phone book for movie theaters. We found them…problem was, the last showings were around 9:30. It was too late for us to see a movie. So we looked for night clubs in the phone book…and either we didn’t know where they were…or they sounded so seedy that we weren’t going to them.

Well, we weren’t gonna stay in the room all night…so back down to the casino we went…figuring we could probably find an interesing club there. First we walked to the Babinga (I think it was called), but there were a lot of rules for that one…so we skipped it. We’re the casual sort…at least we were that night…lol. So off we went…in search of a place to hang out. The Brews Brothers had some pretty loud rock music going on, so we went in there. There was a live band playing 70’s-90’s rock…the stuff we like…so we stayed to listen. We ordered a drink and rocked out from our seats. My sis-in-law told me there were two guys staring at us…and eventually one came over and asked if we were single. Ummm…no…sorry dude.  After our second drink, we had another guy come up to us…this one much older…asking about the band. Well, that apparently was a ploy to get talking to us…cuz he wouldn’t leave us alone, even after we told him we’re married. He was kinda creepy and I got an odd feeling about him. We left not too long after that. It was about 1am. We walked around the casino a bit more…looking for another bar/club. The only other one we found was a little too young for our tatses…so we decided to call it night…for the bars anyway.

We decided some coffee would do us good…so we found a 24 hour cafe. After a steaming mocha and breakfast muffins, we headed back to the room.

We stayed up and talked for quite a while (you know…girl talk…lol) and we didn’t actually get to sleep til about 4am. :P

We slept in late…til about 11:40 or so. My sis-in-law did get up about 10:15 and called the front desk to see if we could stay past check-out time without paying anything more. They let us stay til 1pm. So we checked out…grabbed a couple fruit smoothies on the way out and headed to the mall. Walked around there for a couple hours, window shopping mostly, and then headed home about 4:30.

It was a fun little get-a-way…and relaxing. It was nice to get away from the hubbies and kids for a night. We decided we’re gonna have to do that more often…lol.

Fair Time!

Oy, we’ve been busy lately. Not neccessarily doing anything, just running around a lot. ‘G’ spent the past 3 weeks down in our hometown of Grass Valley switching off visits with both sets of grandparents. He had summer school prior to that (not because he’s failing…he’s not…but because he needed to catch up on math since we had moved and he switched school’s in Feb.), so we wanted to make sure he got some time with the grandparents before school starts again in a couple weeks. ‘J’ had picked him up on Thursday, since his aunt and uncle (my siblings) start school next week. That same day, my sis-in-law and I decided to take the boys to the fair in Quincy, since it was kids day. We met ‘J’ and ‘G’ there. My sis-in-law and I took the two little boys to the kiddie rides and ‘J’ took ‘G’ on the big ones. It was nice father/son time for them. :) We all had a pretty good time, though the two little ones got upset that they couldn’t go on the bigger rides. To 4 year olds we probably sounded pretty hypocritical telling them that they’re big boys all these months with potty training and what-not, and then at the fair telling them they’re not yet big enough for the bigger rides. Ah well, such is life.

Breasts Are For Babies

When has breastfeeding your baby become taboo? It is one of the most natural things in the world…and yet so many people in the U.S. protest it. I have two children of my own, and both were breastfed…my first until he was 8 months, my second until 18 months. I never had a problem nursing in public (or seeing others nurse in public) or watching tv programs where mothers nursed their children. But according to a recent poll, 57% of those polled are opposed to breastfeeding in public, while a whopping 72% are opposed to tv programs showing a mother nursing her baby. What is the U.S. coming to when women are so programmed that seeing a naked breast of a nursing mother finds them turning their head and blurting “gross”? What a sad state we are living, when it’s thought that formula is better than mother’s natural milk for baby. Women need to wake up and realize that we have breasts for the purpose of nursing a baby. Sexuality comes in second. So stop looking at it as gross, but as a mother giving her child the very best start in life…an all-natural diet made specifically for that baby.
